Mitochondrial diseases can be complicated to diagnosis and treat so it is important for you talk with someone who specializes in them. These are usually medical geneticists. There is a great support and information group for people living with mitochondrial diseases in Canada that can help tell you where to head next: http://www.mitocanada.org/about-mitochondrial-disease/prognosis/genetic-counselling/
They have resources separated out by province including contact information for mitochondrial specialists. http://www.mitocanada.org/support/resources/
They also have a great a great description and charts about how mitochondrial diseases are passed down in families. Depending on the mitochondrial condition it can either be passed down from the mother OR need to come from both parents. However, it is a little more complicated because every woman has many, many mitochondria and each one can have a different set of genetics.
