Some specialized genetic testing laboratories such as Genomind, GeneSight, and Pathway Genomics are offering genetic testing that is supposed to help doctors (psychiatrists) find the best medication to treat their patient’s depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, biopolar disorder, Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and/or other mental health or psychological conditions. The labs test for genetic changes or differences that may affect how the body uses and breaks down specific medications. Each lab tests for its own set of genes and gene changes which may include genes coding for: cytochrome enzymes, serotonin transporter proteins, calcium channels, sodium channels, melanocortin receptors, dopamine receptors, breakdown of dopamine, or others. However, this testing has not yet been proven to be helpful in finding the best drug for people. In fact, as we do not fully understand how our bodies use psychiatric medications, the testing can be misleading. The International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG) reports that for a few psychiatric medications, genetic testing (pharmacogenomic information) can be useful; however, the usefulness of genetic testing for most medications is still unknown. They also recommend counseling prior to testing. To learn more about testing for psych medications and its risks and benefits, you may wish to talk to a genetic counselor. You can find a genetic counselor in your area at the NSGC Find a genetic counselor website. You may also wish to talk to your psychiatrist to discuss testing options, pre-testing counseling, and their personal experience with using them to decide which medication to use.
